Luffy grew up in Fuscia town, on an island in the East Blue. As a child he was inspired to become a pirate by the legendary captain Shanks. He accidentally ate the Devil Fruit Gomu Gomu no Mi, giving him the ability to stretch any part of his body. While defending the Red Hair pirates' honor from a gang of mountain bandits, Luffy is kidnapped by Higuma the Bear. The bandit leader takes Luffy out to sea with him to escape Shanks' wrath, and throws him overboard just before being eaten by a Sea King. Luffy is almost swallowed himself, but Shanks saves him from the creature, losing his arm in the process.
